Cortina d’Ampesso, The Beauty Of The Domoliti

View from our Airbnb in Cortina d’Ampezzo

We arrived in Cortina d’Ampezzo late afternoon after driving in heavy rain from Milano. Just as we arrived, the clouds parted, and the sun came out. As we drove up the windy roads to our Airbnb we saw the snow covered mountains and the blue sky. It snowed this morning making our arrival even more spectacular.

Cortina d’Ampezzo is beautiful. Skiing, mountain and road biking, hiking, or enjoying a drink outside one of the many restaurants and bars in the area.

The views are amazing.

Big, beautiful, and upscale. When the Olympics come, prices will go sky high. This is the view from our Airbnb again.

We had the best Airbnb ever. After three years of Airbnb in Italy, this was the real 5 star rating. Our hosts were fantastic. The rooms were spotless, and relaxing. The views amazing. Put a comment on the blog and I will send you the info. We liked it so much we cooked dinner for our hosts. Ninety per cent of our conversation was in Italian. Glad to have Italian Pod and Duolingo helping me.

What I Can’t Travel Without

First and O2 Travel Fan, Runs from any USB charger or the enclosed power supply 120/220 volts. This is also perfect for speeding the drying of clothes.

02 Travel Fan 120/220 with adapter about $15 on Amazon
Multi Port Hi Amperage Charger

I charge 2 iPhones, 2 iPads, 1 Camera, 1 Watch, and can plug in the USB travel fan if need be.

Mini Power Strip
LED night light and 2 prong adapter

After waking into wall at 2 am I newer travel without a night light. This is a dual voltage model available on Amazon. Six for less than $10.

On this month long trip to Italy, we are using carryon luggage only. My wife did better than I did. She traveled with 1 carryon suitcase, and a small handbag. I brought the carryon plus a small under seat back back.

VARENNA, BELLAGIO, LENNO, AND MORE ON LAKE COMO

I love the lake region of Italy. Each lake has it’s special appeal. The mountains that surround the lake give it a special charm.

The villages rise up from the shore of the lake.

Taking the ferries is inexpensive. A all day pass for all points served is 30E and if you are a senior it is 24 Single trips are 5E.

Some of the views may seem familiar. This is the location from many movies. Think Star Wars, and A Month By The Lake..

Next up is Vicenza. Home to much of the work by the Architect Palladio.

Triennale, Milano The Design Musuem

The Triennale in Milano is a design museum in Parco Sempione. In short is has some very interesting exhibits of design in Italy from the early 1900s to present.

The physical displays are very interesting and cover furniture to technology. You will see by the photos what it is all about.

What is lacks is additional assets and repairing of infrastructure and better signs.

Here are some of the exhibits I saw.

Smile.

The above is live art.You will see sections of the painting move as this is a video creation made to look like an oil painting. Exhibition was sponsored by Samsung.

Pecks, the neighborhood deli.

Well not exactly. Like Eataly, and Balduccis the foodie markets in Italy and New York there are extremes here. Prices are alti, high. Selections, nothing but the best.

Bringing items home from Peck can cost more than dining at a fashionable ristorante.

My wife purchased about 8 oz of pecorino cheese, and a small container of frutti di mare and the total was 35 Euros. But this is a special place. Prosciutto is on a cutting board and is cut to order. Nothing that is not fresh is sold here.

Unaffordable but delicious. South African lobster tails.

We enjoyed our visit, and the pecorino cheese is delicious. I think the prices at Eataly are much more affordable. Both at the Rome and Milan stores.

When you make your selection, the items are weighed and you are given a label to take to the cashier. Each selection is wrapped like it was purchased from Tiffany’s but in yellow, not in blue.

Tomorrow, the Triennale Milano, the musuem of design.

We are here in Milano

We just finished our second night in Milano, catching up on needed sleep. They city is very active as this is Fashion Week in Milano and you can see activity everywhere. The weather is pefect, 20-22 C and we walk everywhere.

The photos above are from Starbucks Reserve. With the competition for caffè in Italy, they are doing very well. There was a waiting line go get in, but when I approached a security guard, he ushered Angela and I into the building. They say I look Italian, it does help sometimes.

Last night we had the best meal ever in Italy. That says a lot as this is our nineteenth trip here. Amazingly, it is next to our Airbnb. The ristorante is Ferrelli a Milano. Vino e Cucina . The chef is from Puglia, southern Italy. The menu is very simple and changes daily. I had pasta with pomidori ( three types of tomatoes) a bit of parmigiana and it was delicious. My wife had the tenderloin strips of beef cooked medium rare. Local Pugliesi wine, Nero di Troia wine complemented the meal. We were treated to 4 glasses of limoncello. We shared a torta al cioccolato for our dolce.

IF you are in Milano, I highly recommend this small treasure.

UPDATE. The correct descriptions of our meals are

Angela La Tagliata di Scamone al Pepe Bocciolo e Rosmarino

Greg, Gli Spaghetti ai Tre Pomodori e Sfoglie di Parmigiano

Via Carlo Farini 6 Milano

Next post, Peck and the art of buying at a very expensive grocery store.

Send To Kindle all your travel documents

When traveling light with carryons I hate to have too much paper for my trips. I use the Send To Kindle app and keep a copy of plans and dates on it.

The boarding pass was sent as a back up in cases something happened.

This was done on my iPad, I keep itineraries and spread sheets here just in case.

It is a simple and secure way to handle paper which can get out of control.

All the documents appear in the library of my Kindle app. You can send man types of files to your Kindle. Can be done from desktop computer or i devices.

Our next trip to Italy will last 30 days and cover a lot of area

il prossimo viaggio in Italia our next trip to Italy.

In addition to the places on the map, we will travel from Treviso to Roma where we will spend 10 days. Our plans include arriving on 20 September when temperatures have moderated. September and October are comfortable times to be in Italy. Of course, airfare is much lower in these months and places are less crowded.

Milan is a wonderful city to visit and easy to get around with buses, subways, and trams all over. Google maps works were well with mass transit. Gives numbers, and times. Can not travel without it.

More to follow in next post.

How to find a great Airbnb in Rome

We have visited Rome several times and always enjoyed our visits. Location is one of the most important factors. If you have a favorite neighborhood such as Trastevere, Testaccio, or Campo Dei Fiore base yourself there. Save time and money by being able to walk the areas. In 2017 we stayed near Campo Dei Fiore.  It was a perfect place to explore the neighborhoods and walk to some many places. The Vatican and St. Peters was walkable. Restaurants abounded and shopping for food was close by.

When we booked it, the description looked great. The fact that it was on the Second Floor sounded doable.  Keep in mind the Italian way of numbering floors is quite different from ours. The ground floor or piano terra which is what we in the US would call the first floor. The next floor is the first floor, or primo piano, then on to the second floor which piano second but you are really on the third floor.

Keep this in mind as elevators in the older ( but beautiful) buildings are not prevalent. This is a time lapse of the descent which makes it look easy

52 Steps each time you go in or out

Here are photos from Rome in 2017. Not bad, reasonable space and would return if not for the steps ( 52)

This year I began my search by indicating the dates I needed, the number or people and I specifically searched °Campo Dei Fiore°. This reduced the number of locations and I then searched from the map.

Airbnb map rome

Viewing each listing VERY carefully, I looked for WIFI, KITCHEN, A/C, and NO SMOKING. When I found all of these I looked at all the photos, and at least the first four pages of reviews. It is important to evaluate a review.  As some one who has stayed in Airbnb in the US and Italy I check carefully and recheck with my wife. One bad review does not make a place unworthy of staying. Keep in mind that the map prices shown do not show what the prices really are if you did not fill in your dates of travel. The time of year makes a big difference.

This is a review I posited after a stay in Rome for 18 days in 2017″

“Overall we enjoyed our stay with Marzia. She was very quick to respond to our requests. The location is amazing. Walk out the door to restaurants, shops, a wine bar, and Campo de Fiore. Vatican is about 7-minute walk, save with Piazza Navona. Bus stops on Via Vittorio Emanuele. There is a restaurant on the other side of the building is excellent, Polese, we spent several evenings there. Also, check out the Suplizo on the same street as you head to Campo de Fiore. Great for take out. Kitchen is small but fully stocked with pots pans etc. Small frig but grocery store and the market are so close you will always have fresh food. The bed is comfortable. Hot water works well. WiFi good for browsing and email. AC works, but we arrived in mid September and found building comfortable with out it. The rear has a small terrace which was nice for dinner and wine. It does not have a view, but it was very pleasant. This is an older building and you have 52 steps to get to the room. It was not a bother to me at 74 years old, but my wife took a break going up the stairs. Neighborhood is good and safe. Only problem was major construction going on next to us and loud banging on walls starting at 7 am. I believe this is now finished as far as the wall banging goes. My wife and I enjoyed our stay.”

I would add that I was give a refund of 300 Euros to compensate me for the noise.  I would return there again, if I could not find something on a lower floor.

For this years trip, we found a great place on the Primo Piano which will make things much easier. Located steps from the Campo Dei Fiore, I look forward to walking to so many sights and attractions. The bus stops are close by and the neighborhood is very safe.

This is a decent sized apartment and we are looking forward to it. I will review it in full when we return from Italy in October.
